Epilogue - Patch Notes 4.X

(A virtual room in NERV HQ)

The mood in the ‘control room’ was a bit strained. The reason was easy enough to figure out as the fight between their favorite streamer and a raider captain was replayed on the central screen. Looking over to Isaac, Morgan asked the question on everyone’s mind. “What the hell did he just do?”

Isaac, nose deep in the logs, sighed, and said, “As near as I can tell, he used mental psy to basically hack into her mind, and then did something similar to what the Stepford collars do, putting a control pattern on top of her own thoughts. Then he put a Stepford collar on her anyways, and used that to put a second layer of control over her mind.”

One of the techs nodded. “I’ve accessed his power design template.” When others looked at him, he said, sheepishly, “Looking for bugs, of course. I didn’t edit anything. Anyways, it seems he did an analysis of how the Stepford collars did what they did, and then created a power based on that.”

Isaac sighed, and said, “Well that’s going to be fun if someone figures it out.”

Morgan looked at him. “If? Won’t it be obvious what is happening?”

Isaac shook his head. “No, our boy’s been pretty smart about covering his tracks. He hasn’t even told his crew the full extent of what that power does, and he threw the Stepford collar on the girl, so anyone using mental psy to check would see what they expected to see from someone wearing the collar.”

Morgan frowned. “But others could replicate this? And use it on other players?”

Isaac considered, and then nodded. “Yeah, it would take some familiarity with the Stepford protocols and a specialization in mental psy, as well as long study of someone with the Stepford collar in place, but they could do it. Knowing it has been done before would make it more likely for someone to do it again. They’d need a Power creation kit first, though.”

Morgan considered that, and said, “Next patch, we should severely curtail how many of those things are out in the world, and probably make them single use. Don’t take them away from anyone who already has them, but make it a lot harder for someone to follow up on this.”

“Yeah, especially if someone decides to base their version of the Hundeherstellar nanites instead of the Stepford collars.”

Morgan’s face paled. “Could they do that?”

The tech from earlier spoke up again. “He clearly thinks so. He left dev notes in his power creator, where he considered the changes that would be required to do something like that. He already has a power that allows him to alter someone’s memory, and one that turns them into an ally, so changing their personality doesn’t seem like a stretch.”

Morgan sighed. “And if the situation on Jagloth is any indicator, then there are probably plenty of players out there that would try something like that, just because they can.”

Isaac groaned. “Oh man, that’s a whole different set of problems. We’re still not quite sure what started it, but we’re pretty sure that a player was to blame. Jagloth was one of the available starting worlds for people who wanted to start in the Confederacy.”

Morgan just buried her face in her hands. “Of course it was a player. Damn it all. How bad has it gotten?”

Isaac nodded sympathetically. “Well, so far they’ve been able to limit the spread to the main continent, for the most part, though a couple of the orbital stations and undersea cities have been compromised as well. They’re using scorched earth tactics to hold the line and keep things from spreading any further than they already have. I’m pretty sure the fact that the southern continent and the western chain are still mostly safe is the only reason they haven’t glassed the planet.”

“Damn. This is going to be a PR nightmare if no one finds a cure, or it manages to escape the system. We could lose a lot because of this.”

Isaac smiled. “Well, cheer up. At least no one’s been crazy enough to go poking around on Venus yet, right? Projections are saying we have six RL months before that event happens.”

One of the techs choked suddenly. Everyone turned to look at her, and she blushed, before trying to become more professional. “Um, the Empire is sending a science team to Venus.”

“WHAT???” Isaac and Morgan were in perfect harmony, for once.

Chapter 40 - Ever Onward

We were just about to button up the ship to leave when I noticed a group of ten people approaching the ship, all of them armed. Not being an idiot, I got Jaynie and Cali to join me with our own weapons, and stopped at the edge of the cargo ramp. Raven had the shields up, and was quietly warming up the ship weapons, as well, just in case.

I put up one hand to stop the group before they could reach the shield line, and said, “That’ll be close enough. Who are you, and what is your business here?”

The leader of this group didn’t look like he cared for being challenged, but kept his head about him, at least. “Captain Teague sent us, from the Smuggler’s Alliance. You’re the ones that caught Olona, right? Well Cap’n Teague wants her. He was the one who owned two of the last three harvesters she hit, and wants to explain her mistakes to her.”

When I didn’t say anything, the leader continued. “Now, the Cap’n understands you had a chance to sell the bitch to the Alliance, and decided not to. But we’re hoping you’ll make a better decision this time around.”

“And why should I do that? I’m perfectly happy having the kitty where she is.”

“Because the Cap’n is the head of the Alliance, and all unofficial business on kisArra goes through him, eventually. See now? He’s like the President of the criminal world here. And what he wants, he gets. One way or another.”

I narrowed my eyes at the man, and said, “You know, a lot of people have been throwing their weight around, trying to impress me with how important they are. More than a few of them are dead now. Since you don’t know me, I’m willing to give y’all a pass this once. You go on back to Captain Teague, and have him ask around about what Captain Mollen did to the Yakuza in Sol and Alpha Centauri.”

The leader growled, and said, “That ain’t gonna work for me. See, I’m to get the girl. Whether that means handing over some cred or killing you and taking the girl and your ship, I don’t much care. So you gonna be smart about this or—“

BZZAP!

The leader, unfortunately, never got to finish his threat, as I gave the command to Raven, and she shot him in the face with the weapons we used against other ships. His head just… wasn’t there anymore, and it took the body a second to realize that, before it fell to the ground. The rest of the group stepped back, and I heard one curse out loud.

“You lot stop right there.” Not surprisingly, they got very still. “Now, you’re going to be good kids, and lay your weapons down. Bracers too.” When they complied, I said, “Good. Now, as I was telling the idiot, I’m quite happy with having Olana where she is now, and she isn’t going anywhere. So, you lot, you are going to go back to Captain Teague, and you’re going to tell him that Captain Mollen said he ought to ask about what I got up to in Sol and Alpha Centauri before he starts making threats.”

“I’m a Nomad, which means I can, and will, walk a fucking nuke into his house and blow everyone to hell, just to make sure the bastard dies if he tries and pushes this further. Sure, I’ll lose a little bit of XP because of the death, but you natives will lose a helluvalot more. Are we understanding eachother?”

When none of the thugs spoke, I shot the ground in front of one of them. She yelped, and said, “U-understood!”

I smiled. “Good. Now, you’re going to turn around, and walk out of here. Leave your stuff. If you’re lucky, some of it will still be here after I leave. I see any of you before my ship lifts off, and you’re going to go the same way as your friend, there. Now get!” Another shot in the dirt sent them scurrying off.

Once they were gone, Jaynie and I began sorting through the loot, while Cali kept watch to make sure no one got stupid ideas. I drained all the funds on the bracers, of course. That got us 1,234,545 credits, most of it coming from the bracer of the dead guy, probably from Captain Teague to negotiate for Sana. Oh well, his loss is my gain! The weapons were mostly crap, at least compared to what we already had, so I left most of them. I did grab a pistol for Nyna and a knife for Sana, when she earned it. It was a really nice knife, too.

Shortly after, we buttoned up the ship, and lifted off kisArra. I’d probably have to avoid the planet for a while if I didn’t want to go and kill this Teague guy, but that was no big loss, since I wasn’t planning on coming back here any time in the foreseeable future. There was a lot of universe out there to explore, after all.

As we left the atmosphere, I started thinking about our run to Jagloth. The news reports we’d been able to get never said whether it was just the planet that was blockaded, or the entire system. It would be a lot easier to blockade a planet than trying to set up a net to catch anyone entering the system. But it had apparently been in place long enough that the Navy could have set up probes to watch for ships entering the system in hyperspace.

I decided that the safe bet would be to assume that there were probes checking for ships entering the system, with fast response craft to check out breaches, away from the planet. Then, you use ships in orbit to both keep people out and keep them from leaving. That would take a lot of ships. If they were doing even half of that, then something big must be going on down on Jagloth.

Shearah was waiting for me in my cabin when I had secured the bridge for the long travel through hyperspace. It seems that the girl has a sense of humor, and maybe a bit of a sadistic streak in her as well, since she’d taken the time to use the fabricator to make cat ears and a cat tail plug, both of which she was in the process of forcing Sana to wear. I was amused to see that she had matched Sana’s hair color perfectly. Shearah had even made a full-sized ‘cat bed’ for Sana to curl up on, placing it at the foot of my bunk, and included food and water dishes, with Kitty printed on them.

“Kitty, stop resisting. From now on, you will purr with happiness when the girls play with you. Understand?”

“M-row.”

“Good pet.” I turned to look at Shearah, who was busy taking pictures of the new ship ‘mascot’ which she posted on the ship net. “So, Shearah, did you just come by my cabin to play dress up with my new kitty cat?” I chose to ignore Sana’s annoyed chuff at the idea of putting on cat ears and a tail plug being called ‘dress up’. Well, mostly ignore. I played with the tail plug a bit, before turning the vibration and articulation on, making it move like a real cat’s tail. Sana yowled in surprise before beginning to purr, despite herself.

Shearah giggled, and said, “Well, Master, you remember that you promised rewards when we got back to the ship, right? We were busy before now, with resupplying and getting everything squared away with the new mouths to feed and all. But we’re in hyperspace now, and I thought maybe I could get my reward before the other girls got here?” As she said that, she once again did the ‘girl next door’ thing, since she knew it always got my motor running when she was cute like that.

With an exaggerated sigh, I said, “Fine, fine! Don’t ever say I never do anything for you!” I pulled her to me, my hand coming to rest on her rear, and kissed her. “What do you say we give the kitty a show, hmm?”

“Oh, Master!”

“Mrow!”

(Imperial Winter Palace, Interlaken, Switzerland, Earth)
Emperor Travis I was not pleased. His victory should have been complete by now! The plan should have worked, would have worked if not for the interference of those damn Nomads helping the Princesses to escape. Of course, Merida would have to be dealt with. He couldn’t allow a potential rival to try and take his victory away from him. She and her rebel fleet would have to be crushed.

It was a shame about Sheila, though. He had hoped that she could be conditioned to serve him as part of his harem. Not to produce children, of course. That would not do at all. But he wanted to possess her, and bend her to his will, like he had done to so many women before. But she had escaped, and fled to the Confederacy, nearly starting the war before he was ready.

Now in the War Room of the Winter Palace, Travis looked down on the reports on fleet readiness. Seventy percent of the fleet had fallen in line with the new Emperor. The rest had either been destroyed, or had sought out Merida and her Rebel Fleet. According to the last reports, they had fled to a cluster of stars near the edge of Imperial space. The area was poor in the resources one needed to keep a fleet running, only having a major shipyard in the area, but it held several agricultural worlds that combined represented 35% of the Empire’s agricultural output each year.

Unfortunately, the strategic importance of the ‘breadbasket’ worlds was well known to the military for years, so they had gone to great effort in building fleet bases in the area, and building up weapons caches to help with supply problems. Even worse, there was a Gateway in the area, which made cutting off necessary supplies to the rebels all but impossible. That also left open the idea of sending spies and assassins through the Gate network to undermine Merida’s fleet, but the last few attempts had ended badly, as the rebels had been expecting such things, and captured the spies.

The Admiralty had concluded that the only way to remove Merida from those systems would be to go in force and wipe out the rebel fleet. But the losses would be crippling if they simply invaded. The Empire would be open to attack by its enemies in the Confederacy and the Ihm Imperium. The Free Worlds Alliance might even join in. They needed something that could weaken the rebel fleet’s forces.

That was when one of the researchers in the room happened to mention that if only the Skynet Project had been successful, none of this would have been a problem, since they could just throw Skynet at the Rebels, and let it take down the fleet from inside.

Travis looked up at the researcher as he abruptly shut his mouth, realizing he had spoken aloud in front of the Emperor without leave. That fear was lovely, but now he sensed a potential answer to the problem of Merida. “Speak! What is this Skynet Project, and how would it be able to fight the rebels?”

The researcher gulped, and said, “Your Majesty, the Skynet Project was originally created to identify, track, and deal with hackers within the Earth and Sol information networks. By creating a sentient AI who could use the networks as its underlying architecture, it could seek out criminals anywhere within the net, and combat them with cyberwarfare tactics.”

“I see how that would be useful against the Rebels. You said the project was unsuccessful. What happened to it?”

“At last record, Majesty, the project was trapped on the Venusian colonies, where it couldn’t do any more harm.”

“Interesting. Tell me more.”

Chapter 39 - Ambushed

Kiki and Jaynie left to the local firing range in town to try out Jaynie’s new toy, so I presided over the new cargo getting loaded on board. I distinctly and deliberately didn’t look too closely at the crates the local mob needed taken past the blockade to Jagloth, but Raven’s scans confirmed that they were stasis pods dressed up like standard cargo crates. That confirmed my wish to definitely not go looking into whatever was going on there. Probably trying to get some people into the system to stir up trouble of some sort.

The situation in Jagloth was ‘confused’, to put it mildly. Something had alerted the Confederacy to a danger in the system, and they slammed down a blockade on the entire system, no ships in or out. Anyone that tried to run the blockade was given one warning, and then they were blown out of the sky.

There were still no reports on exactly what was the reason for the blockade, but the rumor mill was going wild. Some said there was a revolt going on, and the Confederacy was trying to crush it. Others said that it was the front line in an all-out war between several large corporations over new, rare resources found on the planet. There were also concerns about a plague, whether biological or the more frightening ‘grey goo’ nanomachine plague.

I was just locking down the crates and the shuttle for transit, while Shearah and Raven took Nyna on the tour of the ship, mainly getting her acquainted with the bridge and the engine room, since that is where she would be spending most of her time while on duty. I left them to it, since Raven wouldn’t let them do anything stupid with her main ‘body’. I really was going to have to ask her about how she came about. I hadn’t given it any thought at first, but along the way, talking with the non-nomads had shown me that fully sapient AIs were extremely rare in this world. The reactions of Nyna and Sana when they realized what Raven was just reinforced that.

I’d left Sana in cat mode, and had her wait in one of the crew quarters with orders to behave herself, until I could decide what to do with her on a more permanent basis. But I should have known better than to try and hide things from women, especially women who spent as much time around me as my crew did. As I left the cargo hold, I found Sheila and Cali waiting to ambush me.

Cali started it off, and said, “So, Master, now that you’ve enjoyed the whole Stepford experience, what’s next? I believe you said something about not liking to use those protocols if possible? Something about finding it ‘sick and wrong’? Ringing any bells?”

That struck a nerve, and the grimace on my face betrayed it. Like the social predators they were, the women didn’t hesitate when they saw that signal of weakness, and pounced. Sheila sighed, and said, “It comes from one of those Nomad beliefs, I assume? I know that it is considered normal in the Empire, while the Confederacy actively restricts the sale and use of Stepford slave collars, and it is illegal outright to buy the slave chips in the Confederacy.”

Cali jumped in then, “But cultural differences are easy to set aside when you’re immersing yourself in a culture that lets you do whatever you want to those you’ve ‘taken’, right? It is a big male power trip. But you’ve kept yourself from using those things before now. Hell, I can even understand keeping the protocols on while we were out in the desert, because that’s just asking for trouble otherwise.”

She paused, and then said, “But we’re back on the ship now, and you’ve already turned off Nyna’s protocols, so why is Sana still a sexy kitty on all fours who can’t even speak?”

As we spoke, we had been moving towards the galley, and without really thinking about it, I pulled three glasses out of the cupboard that held them secure during flight, and grabbed a bottle of whiskey from behind the milk in the fridge. A couple ice cubes went in the glasses, and then I poured us each a drink.

Damn good thing alcohol worked in this game. And the liquor tasted right, too. Without a little ‘mental lubricant’ now and then, life would be a damn sight more trouble, and a lot less interesting. I honestly couldn’t believe that they had the brand I usually drank in real life available in the game. Well, it wasn’t really available here in the Confederacy, so when I finished off the supply I brought on board back in Alpha Centauri, I’d need to find a local distiller that tasted good…

But I was rambling, and on purpose. I took a long sip of my drink, and said, “Yes, I tasted ‘forbidden fruit’, if you will. Yes, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Not going to lie on that. But my views on the Stepford protocols haven’t changed. Sometimes, they’re a necessary evil. Other times, they’re just evil. But we’re in a world where these things exist, so trying to pretend they don’t is a waste of time, and actively dangerous.”

“What I did to Sana was a weapons test. I needed to test out the power I created as kind of a ‘nuclear option’, in case things were really going to shit. And it is good that I did, because it took a lot more time and effort to get that power through than I thought it would, and it definitely caused a more… extreme reaction than I expected.”

“Frankly, I’d be very happy never having to use that power again, just like I hope we never have to use the nuke we stole back on Primo. There is no situation where using this power is going to be a good thing. But I’d rather have my hands dirty than stand by and lose people, so I want to have something I can use to break someone I can’t just shoot, if it comes to that.”

I looked up from my drink, to see Cali staring at me. “So you found an enemy you could test a new weapon on, and found out it was both nastier and less useful than you expected. I get that part. But now tell me how this ties into having a knelfi playing kitty cat?”

I sighed again. “Because I don’t want anyone, in this world or ours, knowing what I did, or how. If they figure it out what I did, then someone else is going to figure out a way to do this, and they might not be as… restrained as I have been in using mental Psy powers to influence people. The potential damage of this power, or one like it, being out ‘in the wild’, is too sickening a thought for me to bear. And that’s just if individuals get a hold on it. If the particulars were known, then every criminal syndicate and government ‘black’ agency would be clamoring to get their hands on it, and me. And they’d likely burn through everyone around me until they got to me.”

Sheila grimaced. “That is true. I wasn’t privy to most of that, since I wasn’t the heir, but I do know that there have been people who developed new or unusual Psy powers who were… aggressively recruited by the Empire so that the military or intelligence services could have their power, or deny it to others.”

I nodded. Honestly, I would have been shocked if it was any different. “So, that is the first reason I can’t just let Sana go. She knows too much. Even if she wasn’t able to find a way to replicate the power herself, she could go to someone who would know how to do it, and then things would get very, very bad. This also means I can’t sell her, or even leave her someplace ‘rented out’ like I did that thug on Choson Ring.”

“The second reason I am keeping her protocols in place is because she is too dangerous. That ‘kitty’ is a trained Confederacy special forces operator. Without explicit commands to keep her out of trouble, she could make life hell for us. She’s probably already plotting a way to make life hell, which is why I’ve got Raven watching her, just to be sure.”

Cali looked nonplussed. “So you enslaved a special forces soldier, and messed with their head? Is she going to be a problem?”

“Well, the Stepford protocols are a second level of protection, beyond what I did to her. I have no doubts that she is a very clever girl, though, and is probably already looking for loopholes in her orders to try and find ways to get at us. She won’t be completely safe unless I break the persona under those protections, and remake her into someone who wants to serve.”

Cali nodded. “And that takes time, unless you use those nanites.”

I shuddered at that, not only at the thought of the nanites, but also the knowledge that my ‘Mindbreaker’ was actually a much tamer version of something far more damning. While working with Raven to come up with Mindbreaker, I realized that if it was possible to replicate the Stepford collars with mental Psy, then it would be possible to replicate the nanites with Psy, too. And there was no way I was going to let that kind of knowledge get out in the universe.

“Right, and I’m not about to compound my sins by covering up an evil with an even more terrible evil. So unless I just kill her outright, I am as trapped as she is, until I can either make it so that she’s not dangerous, or find some other way to keep things which should never see the light of day firmly in the dark.”

Raven appeared at that moment, in her holographic avatar. I suspected she had been listening the whole time, even as she gave Nyna the tour and kept an eye on Sana. After all, when the ship was grounded, an AI had plenty of cycles to spare. “That’s good. I won’t have those nasty nanites or anything like them in my body. You’re a better captain, with a better crew, than I’ve had in a long while, so it would have been a shame to space you all.”

The other two looked shocked, but I simply nodded. “Yeah, I got that the last time you mentioned it to me, Raven.”

“Just making sure you remembered. Anyways, I know why you picked Sana as a test for the Mindbreaker, since you couldn’t just test it on the crew, or random strangers. But since you’ve gone this far, I’d suggest your next steps be that you try and find a defense against this power, in case it does get out, or someone creates something like it independently of you and your work.”

Sheila nodded. “And until that is done, what will you do with the cat?”

I shook my head in disgust. “There’s nothing else for it. I’m going to have to break her, or kill her. And I honestly can’t decide which one is worse at the moment.”

Chapter 38 - Return to keen-Arra

“Oh, MASTER!” Nyna screamed as I bottomed out within her once again. After my ‘talk’ with the two new slaves, I had wasted little time sampling their delicious bodies. Nyna was straddling my lap, her breasts shaking as she bounced up and down upon my rod like the wanton slut I’d programmed her to be, at least temporarily. She shuddered, and her backed arched before she fell forward, clearly a bit spent, even as I released within her.

This was our second round, and it became clear that Nyna did not have the stamina that I had. But then, I had been undergoing very vigorous ‘exercise’ at the hands (and tongues, and… ahem) of five beautiful women for the last few weeks, doing my best to satisfy them all (a feat I am not ashamed to say that I would not have managed without the enhanced stats of this game body).

Pushing the spent knelfi girl off me, I looked down at Sana, who had spent all this time in ‘kitty’ mode, curled up and watching the two of us. She looked like she was in a bit of… well, let us just call it distress. And I guess I had no choice but to help her out with that distress, right? “Present.” A simple command, but the Stepford collar’s protocols told her what it meant, and made sure she complied.

Turning over, Sana gave off a loud “Nyan” as she stretched like a cat, and then turned away from me on all fours, arching her back to present her cute butt and sex to me. With a grin, I reached out and touched the wetness I knew would be there. I slipped a finger inside her, to a husky “Meow!”

It was almost four hours later when the dawn broke, but I’d only managed a quick nap in that time. I could sleep on the ride back to the capitol, of course. For now, I was content to have thoroughly educated the new slaves on what their duties would be. Nyna was shaping up nicely, having accepted her position, and seeing that sliver of hope that I might make her a captain if I ever have a second ship. It was a small hope, but it seemed to sustain her, which was enough for now.

Sana, on the other hand, was helpless in the state I had her locked in. I made her walk on all fours and act like a cat while we weren’t around others, but even when we had company, she could not speak unless spoken to, and I had implanted several commands to ensure obedience, if not loyalty. Inside her head, she was still mourning the loss of her ‘purity’. It seems she had always wanted her first time to go to someone she loved, or something like that. A hopeless romantic in the military. Those were rare finds, indeed.

At any rate, I let her stew in her own circumstances while we got to the Harvester. With the help of Shearah and Nyna, we were able to quickly get the Harvester up and running again, and we took it back to the position where it had been stolen from, and used the repaired communications to get a flyer out to pick up the Harvester. Once we had confirmed the Flyer had control of the Harvester, we got in the shuttle, and headed back to keen-Arra.

Teach Sana Olona a Lesson

Sana Olona is the leader of a group of raiders that has been plaguing the smuggler harvesters for months now. She’s also been plaguing the ‘official’ harvesters, so they have a substantial bounty out on her, in addition to our payment.

Bonus: If you wish, a slave collar will be provided which you can use to capture Sana instead of kill her. If she is captured and enslaved, the Smuggler’s Alliance will be glad to discuss extra dispensation for the purchase or lease of the slave.

The quest rewards and the bounty totaled up to a really impressive 400000 Credits. After the split, that was still a healthy amount of coin (well, there weren’t any actual coins, but the idea’s the same). The Smuggler’s Alliance tried to negotiate with me to purchase or lease Sana’s ownership from me, but this time I had more than just the influence of the dragon tattoo keeping me from letting her go. If I allowed someone else to get their hands on her, they might be able to break the Mindbreaker’s conditioning, which would then allow her to tell them about what I did. And that would bring a whole host of problems my way.

Mindbreaker was my nuclear option, but anyone can tell you that nuclear options have big downsides. For me, the biggest downside was that I would have people from all over trying to hunt me down. Either they would be trying to kill me, or forcibly ‘employ’ me, or whatever fits their own interests, or they’d be looking for the specifics of how I made the power, and would attempt to recreate it. And they probably wouldn’t be as restrained as I was on using people as test subjects.

But honestly, like all mental Psy powers, the greatest strength of Mindbreaker was that it was subtle (well, right up until it slammed home), and worked best on people who either weren’t expecting it, or had no way to resist it. Rule of thumb was that mental powers more complicated than Mind Pulse were useless against those actively expecting them unless the difference in raw power was absolute. So the more people knew about Mindbreaker or my other mental powers, the harder my job would become.

Instead, I took on a couple more jobs, in addition to the gig we had heading towards Jagloth. In fact, once people heard that there was a ship braving the blockade, there were a few more jobs to go up. One paying gig is good. Two paying gigs going to the same place is better. And paying for food, fuel, maintenance, and the like is expensive. Especially since I may have got a bit rough with the ship at times when we were doing crazy maneuvers and the battles we’d faced. Plus, getting the paint and hull touched up after dealing with all this sand.

Combined with the spice hauling gig, that made the payoff of a run to Jagloth through the blockade a cool 10 million credits. Needless to say, everyone was quite excited by the thoughts of what they could do with their share of the money. Well, the free ones, at least. My pets seemed to be dreaming about what they could convince me to buy for them.

After taking the jobs, we set about the mundane business of purchasing food, drink, medical supplies, and so on for the journey ahead. I always insisted on having at least two months of emergency rations aboard the Raven at all times, and had started keeping another month’s worth in the shuttle, as well. Three months’ worth of rations was overkill, probably, but it would be a lifesaver if we were ever forced to go on a long run, or got shipwrecked someplace where there weren’t things we could eat. Topping those off took 2000 credits out of the Ship account. I also made good on my agreement with Kiki, and picked up some machine tools and more supplies for the fabber. That took 3000 credits out of the Black Star company accounts, but I thought it was well worth it.

Kiki was waiting for us at the ship when we returned. Raven had been keeping me updated about what was going on, and the Felisan had moved her personal gear into the Raven’s passenger berth, along with what appeared to be more than a few tools of her own. I expected she kept most of her gear and materials in a bracer or other storage device.

The Felisan took one look at Nyna and Sana, and sighed. “You went out hunting in the desert, and somehow managed to come back with not one, but two beautiful knelfi slavegirls? I really ought to stop being surprised, given what you’ve done so far.”

I laughed, and pointed to the two newcomers as I said, “Well, one was trying to kill me, and the other was a quest reward. Not my fault she didn’t read the termination clause of her contract with the smugglers.”

Kiki eyed me, and Nyna, before saying, “And they just gave a beauty like her to you as part of the reward?”

I nodded. “Oh, yes. I expect that it was a move designed to try and bind me closer to the Smugglers. Especially given how the laws regarding who can be enslaved work in the Confederacy. Reading into it, I’d say Nyna falls in a grey area, and this is like the ‘favor’ that they expect to be repaid later. Unfortunately, I’m not exactly planning on coming back to this sandpit again.”

Stepping up the ramp, I paused, looking over my shoulder at Kiki. “Also, I had Raven go in and rip out the code in her collar that would have made her spy on me and allowed the Smugglers to control her by remote if I turned against them. That collar now functions as a normal Stepford collar, without the back doors the Smugglers put into it.”

Kiki chuckled. “Well, that’s good. I would have had to find new living arrangements if you had let an obvious trojan horse onto your ship. What about the other one? She was trying to kill you, you said?”

“Oh, she’s a former CAF commando that got booted for not agreeing to be an officer’s fucktoy. Then she became a raider on this dustball. I beat her in a duel, and slapped the collar on her, so now she’s mine. The Stepford protocols are on, because she hasn’t quite accepted her new place in the grand scheme of things, and she’s too dangerous to let off a tight leash until then. Call her a long-term project.”

Kiki didn’t smile, but she nodded. The involuntary slavery thing didn’t sit completely right with her, it seemed, but this was a big universe, and even Nomads could only go so far in changing the rules it ran by.

I decided to get her mind off of things, and said, “So, you’ve been set up for a few days, and Raven tells me you’ve been having fun setting up your workshop. Got anything to show me yet?”

The Felisan immediately perked up as I mentioned her passion. “Yes! Jaynie said she wanted a new assault rifle for when she’s on missions, and needs to put the hurt on. Psyber weapons are good for extended missions, because you don’t haul as much ammo, but I showed her a trick for quickloading mags from your bracer to a rifle without dumping the old mags all over the place.” She held up a gun for me to inspect, and I’ll admit that I whistled at the stats on the thing.

I nodded to Jaynie, who was hopping with anticipation, and said, “Ok, fine. Go try her out. But no firing that thing inside my ship! The psyweapons can be set to not damage the hull. Kinetics can’t, and I don’t feel like having our doc patch up ricochet wounds. And I KNOW Raven doesn’t want you poking holes in her hull!”

Chapter 37 - Tradition

Fortunately, I hadn’t told anyone about my new power, so no one would know if I was… getting creative with the truth. As with my shapechanging, it was a simple matter of simply deciding what truths to tell, and letting them draw conclusions that happened to be what I wanted them to believe, while not actually telling a lie.

OK, so the ‘not lying to the crew’ thing was important for two reasons. First, because if it ever came out that I’d lied outright to them, then it could potentially rip the crew apart. And second, because I wasn’t convinced that there weren’t powers or abilities that could passively detect lies based on some kind of mental ability.

Either way, telling the truth (technically) in a vague and misleading way would be easier for the rest of the crew to accept than outright lies, especially when I let it drop that I was a streamer, and I wanted to keep some secrets, so they couldn’t be used against me, or against the group as a whole. ‘Need to know’ sucks, and no one likes hearing it, but I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t rather hear truth for the basics and need to know on the details, than to be lied to outright. That was why spooks were so disliked when I was in the Navy. They never told the truth, unless it was layered in a good two dozen lies first.

Still, I was definitely going to get something of an interrogation about my new ability. And, right on cue, Jaynie stepped forward and spoke up.

“So, boss. Mind telling us what the hell you did to the girl? Didn’t see you hit her with anything until you slapped the collar on her, and she was already calling you master before that.”

I chuckled. “Well, you could consider that a successful test. I call it Mindbreaker. Basically, I worm inside your shields, like I do with Mindread, and then do the equivalent of setting off a flashbang inside their skull. But this is the first time I’ve actually been able to use it, since I’m not about to go testing shit like this on you guys. Unless you’re volunteering, Jaynie?”

Jaynie quickly shook her head, and held up her hands in a rejection of the idea. “No, I’m good. Just wanted to be clear on what went down. You hadn’t really attacked at all, so her going down screaming just looked off. How’d you get the idea to do something like that, anyways?”

“Well, I had a couple inspirations, but you could say the only one I’ll talk about here is boot camp back when I joined the Navy in our world. They break you down so that you can be remade into something that suits their needs, same as with any branch of the armed forces.”

Jaynie shrugged. “All right. So it isn’t something you can do without working on it?”

I laughed. “No, it isn’t an instantly OP thing. If my new pet hadn’t been so distracted with the fight and let her shields slip because I angered her, I wouldn’t have been able to worm my way in, certainly not without alerting her.” I paused, and then got serious. “But if I can do it, then someone else can, too. So up your Special Defense when you can, and practice the tricks I taught you to keep people from using Mindread on you.”

As we were finishing that conversation, Cali came up from the path leading to cove where the Harvester was stashed. “The raiders are dealt with, Master. Shearah is overriding the security on the Harvester as we speak. We should be able to arrange for pickup before long.”

Shanni finally spoke up. “The remaining warriors of the sietch are due back soon. We have not been able to contact them since the raiders attacked. They would likely see you as a threat if they encountered you out of sietch, until you were far from this place. Especially if you called down flyers to pick up the Harvester here.”

I sighed. “All right. We’ll wait for daylight. If the Freemen haven’t shown up by then, we should have time enough to get away from the sietch before they show up. I’d rather not have any unfortunate accidents in the dark.” Looking back to Raven, I said, “Get in touch with the shuttle, and have them land by the Harvester. No sense hiding, and we don’t want to look too threatening. And it would probably be safer to have everyone in a single group, rather than getting spread out.”

Shanni nodded, and said, “By tradition, outsiders who enter a sietch unbidden are to be purged immediately. However, a service to the tribe has been done, without expecting reward. It would have been easy enough for you to attack the leader first, but you were worried about them taking hostages. As a Freemen warrior, I offer sanctuary of the sietch for this night, and provisions for your journey back to keen-Arra. I cannot do more without leave of the First.”

I nodded to her. That’s about what I expected. The warriors we had helped that allowed us to buy the Freemen-made stilsuits had said similar things about the Freeman ways. “Thank you. If there is a place we may rest the night, then in the morning we shall take the Harvester back to where the raiders stole it before activating the radio.”

One of the Freemen women came in at that point, and said, “Places have already been prepared for you, and those the raiders have captured.” Shanni looked like she was about to say something, but the woman shook her head. “It was the only honorable course open to you, Shanni. It did not take much wisdom to see what you would do.”

Other Freemen entered now, taking the bodies of the slain raiders away, most likely to deal with the aftermath of the battle however they normally did. Checking my HUD, I saw that we still had almost four hours until dawn.

Retiring to the rooms we’d been given, I took Sana and Nyna with me. The other girls didn’t look exactly happy, but they understood that I needed some time to thoroughly enjoy my new property. I also promised to properly reward them for their deeds when we got back to the ship.

The two slaves were in submissive poses, both collared and naked, kneeling by my bed, looking up at me with looks of adoration and, dare I say, worship. Even though I knew it was fake, I could see how people might get swayed by this kind of thing. Two beauties looking at me in such a way did wonders for my ego. Still, before I began enjoying them, there were a few things I needed to hear answers to.

“As your Master, you may both speak freely for the moment, with your true thoughts. If you do not keep a civil and respectful tone, however, I will simply remove your ability to speak altogether. Am I understood?”

“Yes, Master.” The two slaves spoke in unison, though while Nyna’s voice was resentful, and a bit despondent, Sana’s was clearly brimming with barely checked rage at what had happened to her.

“Good. Now, we’ll start with Nyna. I know you have some skill as a Mechanic and Pilot. That’s good, because I could use a backup to both those things on my ship. You got a raw deal, because you didn’t read that contract closely enough, but if you do good work, you’ll find that being my slave isn’t so bad. Your Stepford protocols will remain on until we get back to my ship. The desert is dangerous enough without having wild elements throwing a wrench in the works. Prove to me that you can be trusted, and that you’ll work hard, and those protocols will remain off. Right now, I only have the one ship and a shuttle. But some day I might find another ship, and on that day, I’ll have two ships with only the single captain.”

I trailed off, letting her imagination run wild on that idea for a bit. Then I said, “Of course, part of any decisions, whether on your protocols getting turned off or any future matters, will depend on both the skill and the enthusiasm with which you undertake the tasks I give you, whatever they might be, or whoever they might be with. Understand?”

Nyna gulped, but nodded her head, clearly getting what I was hinting at. “Yes, Master. I’ll do my best to make you happy with my skill and… and enthusiasm.” Well, she was trying, at least. That was something. She might actually turn into a decent crew member.

I turned to look at Sana. “As for you, you are not allowed to lie to me, ever. That is an order. Now, I want to hear how you became a raider. You’re clearly a better fighter than the rest of the idiots you had with you. You have actual training, unless I miss my guess. How did you become a raider?”

The knelfi warrior grit her teeth, and practically spat out, “I was a Sergeant in the Confederate Armed Forces, Special Operations Command. Fully trained on any weapon system in known space, and I used to be enhanced with augments to enhance speed, strength, and survival ability. Most of my augments were ripped out after my discharge, except for a few biological enhancements, like my toxin screen.”

“What were you discharged for?”

“Officially, it was a bad conduct discharge for assaulting an officer. The assault happened because the officer in question thought his rank meant he could take me whenever he wanted, and I thought differently. He was connected, and I wasn’t, so I was out, with a black record. No one wants to hire a troublemaker, so work was short until I found myself on kisArra. Muldoon used to run my group, and he thought he could take what he wanted, too. But he tried to drug me, so he got dead, and I took over the group. Now the group is dead, and I’m a slave.”

“And I trust you’re fully aware that, as a slave, your duties are whatever I tell you they are, even if it means riding my cock like it was the best gift anyone could ever give you?”

She bristled, but nodded, reluctantly. “Yes, you bastard. I’m aware that I don’t have any choices any more, now that you did whatever it was that ripped through my head.”

I smiled at that. “Yes, you were a good test of a Psy power I’d just developed. You are going to be a submissive pet the rest of your life unless you are able to persuade me that you have some worth besides warming my bed and helping to defend my ship. You may even find yourself reduced to being a literal pet, forced on all fours, and being unable to speak without permission. Your task is different from Nyna’s. If you prove to me you are worth more as someone capable of making decisions, I will keep you as you now are. Prove to me you are REALLY worth something, and I may even see if there is a way to bring your former personality to the surface for longer periods. Fail, and you won’t even remember your name. You’ll be just a former knelfi who now lives their life pretending to be a cat.”

Sana bristled at that, and said, “I’m not a damn animal! You imperials are all the fucking same! Racist bastards! I ought to kill the lot of you and be done! You—“

With a command of my bracer, I activated Sana’s Stepford protocols, and set them to ‘sexy kitty’. “That’s enough of that.”

“MEOW! Mrow? MROW!! HISSSSS!” Sana, it seemed, was not too happy with me.
